Route from Sandycove to Mullingar
Click on the map above to load the interactive map. You will be asked for permission to access the device's location.
- The map shows our planned route for the Royal Canal Odyssey 2026. We've checked the entire route on foot and (as of 18 May 2026) it is all currently accessible. However, unforeseen path closures or other conditions on the day may necessitate small detours. With that in mind, please check back here a day or two before the Odyssey for the most up-to-date version of the GPX file or interactive map.
- To load the Royal Canal Odyssey 2026 route onto your own GPS watch, smartphone, or other device, download the RCO 2026 route GPX file (please check back a day or two before the Odyssey for the final version).
- This route should be treated as a guide rather than a required route. The Royal Canal Odyssey is not a race and each participant is free to adapt the route in whatever way they want.
- Most importantly, use your judgement and do not proceed on any section that seems unsafe. We want everyone to get to their chosen destination safe and well.
- The route basically follows the Royal Canal Way from Spencer Dock (where the canal meets the River Liffey) all the way to Dublin Bridge in Mullingar, with only two small detours. The first is an (optional) out-and-back detour at Clarke's Bridge in Ballybough to visit the James Joyce mural at North Richmond Street and the O'Connell School where Joyce was a pupil. The second is a necessary minor detour around a short section of the Royal Canal Way at Rathborne / Ashtown that is currently closed for resurfacing.
- The pathway between Castleknock and Clonsilla train stations (known as the Deep Sinking) is not suitable for cycling and cyclists are prohibited from using it. Cyclists should bypass that section of the route on road.
- Please note that the points marked on the map are not support stations - they are points of interest. Royal Canal Odyssey is an unsupported event (unless you have arranged support for yourself). It is possible to buy food and drink from shops, cafes, etc. at some of the marked points of interest, but please make sure that you will have access to whatever you need over your chosen section of the route.

Bus and train transport
The most frequent public transport between Mullingar and Dublin is the 115 bus, which also serves many points along our route:
Mullingar is on the Dublin-Sligo train line. This train serves several other stops along our route, but check the timetable to see which stops each train serves, because it varies.
